Treat Yourself to A Wellness Retreat

Self-care is not selfish.
There, I said it.  In today’s world, putting yourself first is seen as a negative thing.  Taking care of yourself by extension seems like an indulgent pastime for self-absorbed folk.  This is simply not true.  Self-care is crucial for our ability to live healthy, radiant lives.  Taking care of yourself can be as simple as taking a bath, creating an at home spa day or taking time to read a book.  Take it one step further and allow yourself to indulge in a spa day or wellness retreat.  Not convinced?  Here are five reasons to book that day off today.

1. Let Someone Else Do the Work

Daily, simple self-care is wonderful, but be sure to allow someone else to do the work once in a while.  As the seasons are changing, and as we enter the holidays which are often all about giving and serving others, indulge in yourself first.  Allow someone else to take care of you.  Get a massage, or go to a spa for the day.  Allow yourself to receive, without needing to give anything in return or do anything at all.

2. Show Up for Yourself to Show Up In Your Life

Self-care is self-serving.  We cannot show up for ourselves if we don’t take care of ourselves.  If we can’t show up for ourselves, we can’t show up in our lives.  We cannot pour from an empty cup.  Being cared for by someone who refuses to care for themselves leaves both people feeling exhausted.  Fill up your cup with self-love before you give. 

3. Stress Management

Caring for ourselves is crucial in managing stress and anxiety.  It’s far too easy to get into a negative spiral once we are stressed or anxious.  Suddenly, healthy food, movement and rest are not at the top of our priority list.  The external replaces the internal.  Counteract this crazy world by taking time every day to tune back inwards and spend a few moments, minutes or hours doing exactly what your body and mind need today.

4. It Helps You Process Emotions

On a physical level, we store emotions in our bodies.  Through easy going movement and bodywork such as massage, shiatsu or acupuncture, we physically move energy through our bodies.  It may sound a bit crazy, but there’s a reason you feel so much lighter, balanced and positive after treatments like these. 

5. You Are Worthy

The most important argument for why you should take care of yourself every day, and allow others to take care of you for you?  You are worth it.  Self-care is self-love.

Go out and indulge.  Then bring this indulgence into everyday life.  I suggest prioritizing self-care like you prioritize work.  Schedule it into your calendar like a meeting.  Show up for yourself, be self-serving.  Your body, your mind and the people around you will thank you for taking care of yourself.
